Offering holistic healing for dogs, cats, and exotic pets with Dr. Melissa Reidy

What is Acupuncture?

Veterinary acupuncture is an ancient healing modality rooted in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM). It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body—called acupoints—to promote healing, reduce pain, and improve function. These acupoints stimulate the nervous system, enhance blood circulation, and trigger the release of natural pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory substances.

At Emergency Animal Hospital of Ellicott City, we blend this time-tested practice with modern veterinary medicine to offer a well-rounded approach to your pet’s health.

What Conditions Can Acupuncture Help Treat?

Acupuncture can be a supportive treatment for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions in animals, including:

  • Neurological issues (e.g., spinal cord injuries, intervertebral disc disease)
  • Pain management (e.g., arthritis, post-surgical recovery)
  • Musculoskeletal problems (e.g., hip dysplasia, torn ligaments)
  • Gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., vomiting, diarrhea, IBD)
  • Respiratory conditions (e.g., feline asthma, kennel cough)
  • Skin issues (e.g., allergies, chronic itching)
  • Anxiety and behavioral concerns

What Are the Benefits of Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is safe, minimally invasive, and well-tolerated by most pets. The benefits include:

  • Reduced pain and inflammation
  • Enhanced mobility and flexibility
  • Faster healing and recovery
  • Improved circulation and organ function
  • Greater overall well-being
  • Minimal side effects

Many pets become relaxed during treatment—some even fall asleep!

Success Story: Meet Morticia

One of our most inspiring acupuncture cases is Morticia, a five-month-old kitten who came to EAH after a fox attack. Morticia had extensive wounds on her back that damaged her spinal nerves. She could barely move her hind limbs, especially her left leg, and had little to no feeling in her back legs.

She was initially treated with antibiotics and pain medications, and we added weekly acupuncture sessions to support her recovery. Each session included a 25-minute needle placement, often with Vitamin B12 injections at specific acupoints to enhance the effects.

After just two treatments, Morticia began showing signs of feeling and movement. Her right leg returned almost completely to normal. While her left leg is still a bit stiff, she continues to improve each week. Her playful energy is back, and her mom, Anne Morrissey, couldn’t be happier.

FAQs

While most surgeries—especially routine ones like spays and neuters—are generally safe, every procedure carries some level of risk. That’s why we perform a pre-surgical exam and bloodwork to assess your pet’s overall health and minimize potential complications.

During surgery, your pet is in skilled, caring hands. Our team follows strict safety protocols and uses advanced monitoring equipment to track vital signs like heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure. A dedicated team member stays by your pet’s side from start to finish to ensure they remain safe, comfortable, and closely observed throughout the entire procedure. If you have any concerns about your pet’s health before surgery, we’re always here to talk it through with you.

Recovery varies by procedure, but most pets go home the same day with clear instructions. Activity should be restricted for at least 7–14 days, depending on the procedure. Our expert veterinarians will guide you on safe timing for walks, play, and bathing. Expect rest, limited activity, and follow-up care to ensure proper healing.

Your pet may experience mild discomfort, but we provide pain management before, during, and after surgery to keep them as comfortable as possible throughout recovery.

Surgery costs can vary based on your pet’s needs and the type of procedure. We’ll provide a clear, upfront estimate and walk you through your options so you can make the best decision for your pet’s care. For added flexibility, we also accept CareCredit, a health-focused payment option that allows you to manage veterinary expenses over time.

We believe great veterinary care is built on partnership. From your first visit forward, you’ll find a team that empowers you with guidance and education, supports you through both routine care and unexpected moments, and works together to ensure every visit is as low-stress as possible. Whether you’re here for preventive care or same-day urgent needs, our goal is simple: to promote lifelong health, well-being, and peace of mind. That’s why we serve with the motto, “From wags to worries, we’ve got you covered!”
